What I Hear

For me, a "soundwalk" is quite natural. Making a lot of street photographs, à la Gary Winogrand and Joel Meyerowitz, I spend a decent amount of time walking around neighborhoods observing and keeping watch of people and things -- looking for a moment to capture. Here I walked around midtown during the day, this way I would have an easier time paying attention to key details, since the day in midtown is uncharacteristically mellow. I mostly heard the typical sounds of cars passing, muffled conversation, and the rare bird chirp (since it was cold out this day). Unusual sounds heard would be: people drinking coffee, splashing of water falling from high objects due to rain from the previous day, construction workers ordering breakfast at a corner vendor, window cleaners spraying the windows of huge brand-name stores, the constant sound of wind exaggerated by the multiple objects and buildings around, cabs pulling over to the curb and car horns being pressed down, people having conversations (mostly on cell phones), security for said brand-name stores opening doors for passer-byers.

The most notable thing was the silence, not so much complete silence, but the silence of people as they walked to their various destinations as if possessed and on a mission -- organic like.
